Alexander Dubovoy, piano and Hans Bilger, bass: Alexander Dubovoy is from the San Francisco Bay Area and first developed a love for jazz through programs like the Stanford Jazz Workshop. Hans Bilger grew up in Brooklyn playing bluegrass with his family and hearing music throughout New York. They met as undergrads at Yale University and were stunned to find that Yale does not have a jazz program. They became leaders of a student movement to start one. Both have fought tirelessly for jazz education and view improvisation as a powerful interdisciplinary concept. As a result, Dubovoy recently completed his thesis on the history of jazz in the Soviet Union, in which he analyzed the relationship between music and social change under the Bolshevik regime.
